Reporters in the New York & Michigan Solutions Journalism Collaborative won first-place honors on Wednesday night as part of the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual awards recognizing the best of the year in metro Detroit journalism.
The reporters, part of NYMISOJO’s journalism fellows program, received accolades for their reporting on issues surrounding the caregiving of older adults. The SPJ event was held at the San Marino Club in Troy, Michigan.
One of the contest judges remarked: “This collaboration amounts to a powerful series on life and death. Stories are unique and lovely portraits on quiet leaders.”
Here are some of the stories recognized in the award:

The collaborative also won two third-place honors, one for its extensive coverage of maternal and infant health issues in southeast Michigan. Eleanore Catolico also won a third-place award in features reporting for her story “Art therapy helps family caregivers cope with challenging times” highlighting programs for caregivers in southeast Michigan.
The collaborative’s reporting on caregiving is generously supported by grants from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation; its maternal and infant health series has been backed through a 2024 fellowship with the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
